Whether you are celebrating Cinco De Mayo with cocktails, tacos, sweets, or all three, my picks will give you a little bit of everything with a whole lotta flavor!

If you are looking for colorful cocktails and a fun atmosphere, look no further than Gracias Madre in WeHo! Their drinks are beautiful and they will be celebrating with $5 appetizers all day long! If you attend later in the evening, you can enjoy a live mariachi band and boozy snow cone machine! P.S. they’re known for their vegan-friendly dishes.

2. Taco Maria

First of all, can we acknowledge how awesome it is that Cinco de Mayo happens to fall on a Tuesday…get it? Taco Tuesday! The perfect place to celebrate this once in a blue moon, solar eclipse, meteor shower experience is at Taco Maria. They serve so many different menus throughout the week (tacos, Prix Fixe dinner, Prix Fixe brunch), but Tuesday nights they keep the tacos on the menu for your enjoyment! They have a flavor combination for every palate!

3. Corazon Y Miel

They have an intimate, but lively bar area with easy parking and beautiful art covering the walls.  Be sure to bring friends that like to share because the creativity of the dishes is off the charts!

Believe me, there are countless places to celebrate Cinco de Mayo! These are just some of my favorites. If you are looking for something different or closer to you, try:

Wolvesmouth: The Ultimate Dinner Party

I had heard about wolvesmouth a couple of years ago, but was discouraged by the unconventional style. I don’t take rejection very easily, and because of the unorthodox reservation process, (you must sign-up for their e-mail list, wait for them to send you a list of dates and times for that weekend, send in a request, then wait to hear if you have been chosen), I didn’t think I was interesting enough to be chosen. So, I waited. I waited a long time, years in fact. Finally, after receiving the millionth e-mail from them, I finally resolved that I would never have the chance to experience this elusive dinner party if I didn’t at least attempt to send in a reservation request. I was chosen. I thought it was a fluke, but conversation at the table would later reveal that I was among few that had been chosen upon their first reservation request.

It truly was a unique dining experience, and the most interesting dinner party I have ever attended. Dining with strangers, in someone’s home, among taxidermy, was intimidating at first, but very normal by the third course and second glass of wine. It’s difficult to tell whether or not each course was a dish or an art piece, but one thing was for sure: it was all delicious! The flavor combinations were so complementary and completely transformative. I believe this is something that can only be experienced firsthand in order to fully understand, so my descriptions will be minimal. However, I encourage you to sign-up for the mailing list and apply, apply, apply, until you are chosen.

Ribeye cap, creamed kimchi, beef tongue, asian pear, squid ink dumpling, sabayon, crispy shallot

Starting off with a black and white dish is definitely an interesting way to kick off the courses, but the ribeye and beef tongue covered in squid ink and sabayon was a great introduction to what would be an unforgettable dinner.

Albacore, prawn, avocado, tomatillo, serrano, grape, poblano tamale, coctel mariscos, onion

IMG_1062

Chicken thigh, kale, grilled pineapple, peanut green curry, coconut, cauliflower, yucca, jicama

IMG_1064

Halibut, tarragon hollandaise, sunchoke, celery root, beet, potato profiterole

IMG_1071

Sweet potato veloute, crab, green onion,  brioche, pickled chili, chive

Easily the richest dish due to the veloute, but oh so decadent!

IMG_1074

Rabbit, mushroom veloute,  hen of the woods, apricot, dried cherry, endive, escarole

IMG_1076

Pork belly, johnny cake, green apple, red cabbage gazpacho, brussels,  caramelized onion, apple, dill

IMG_1078

Pear, cajeta, pear skin ice, honey coconut crunch, crepe, vanilla lemon pastry cream

This was easily the best dessert I have ever eaten. Who knew that pear skin ice was so yum?!

Lime tart, mandarin, mandarin lime ice, pistachio, butternut squash mousse

Listening to Chef Craig Thornton discuss each course and engage with all of the guests is half of the fun and allure. In creating this experience, he started by asking himself, “What would I want to eat?” This article explains why he has chosen this medium for diners to come together as strangers to enjoy this experience he has created and perfected. Rumor has it, and by rumor I mean straight from Chef Thornton’s mouth, this dinner party will be moving and expanding. I don’t want to ruin the surprises, but let’s just say, I’m very excited for what is to come.

Sunday Mornings at Sqirl

Jessica Koslow’s Sqirl is a landmark on the outskirts of Silver Lake where you will find a line out the door and toast aplenty. My brunch bucket list is getting longer and longer, so I figured I needed to start somewhere, and fast! Foodies, celebs, and hipsters alike can all agree on the deliciousness that is Sqirl, so I knew that should be my first stop!

It began as a preserves company in 2011, and is now THE brunch spot in LA. Speaking of preserves, the burnt-brioche toast covered in house Ricotta and Jam is the perfect start (or sweet end) to your meal here. Yes, you’re paying $7, and yes, it’s SO WORTH IT. We indulged in the raspberry vanilla jam and the strawberry rose jam. Long story short, it was hard to choose a favorite, but I ended up buying a jar of the strawberry rose to brighten up my everyday toast at home.

Coincidentally, the morning I decided to dine at Sqirl, it was featured in the New York Times. This made our dish choices really easy! First, we shared the Sorrel Pesto Rice bowl with Kokuko rose Brown Rice, Sorrel Pesto, Preserved Meyer Lemon, Hot Sauce, Radish, French Sheep Feta, and a Poached Egg. Upon first bite, the lemon comes through, quite strongly in fact. However, as soon as it is in the same mouthful as the amazing feta cheese, the tartness is cut in the best way possible! I never thought I would be eating a dish containing rice and pesto for brunch, but I’m so glad that it happened!

We also got the seasonal special Red-Flannel Hash. It was a warm skillet filled with Roasted Beets, Roasted Potatoes, Cheese, Onions, Horseradish, Lemon Zest and topped with an egg (or two in my dad’s case). The beets and potatoes were the perfect base to the hash, and I’ve never loved beets more! As delicious as everything was, let me warn you, if you choose the exact dishes we did, you will be so full! I have never eaten so much starch so early in the morning!

This place gets crowded, and rightfully so! We went at 8AM and enjoyed elbow room, no line, and other LA chef sightings! If you go on a weekend, I recommend showing up early, the earlier the better!
