You.Only.Live.Once, so Eat the Best Shawarma

l

It’s been awhile since I last posted, but I am still getting a good amount of views each day, which is still mind-boggling to me. I truly appreciate your loyalty and patience. Today’s post will be short and sweet, but not because the subject matter is anything short of amazing.
I recently visited my sorority sisters at UC Davis in Davis, CA in Yolo County, hence the title. Every time I visit, I MUST visit Sam’s Mediterranean Cuisine in Downtown Davis. I have had almost everything on the menu, including their heavenly, homemade hummus served with fresh pita and garnished with crispy cucumbers. However, their standout dish is their Beef Shawarma.

The beef is perfectly cooked with so much flavor and garnished with tons of fresh lettuce, tomatoes, and cucumbers! I’m not a huge fan of when veggies overwhelm a sandwich, but this is not only the perfect ratio (because it is stuffed with so much meat), it heightens the flavor of the shawarma. The crispness of the cucumber suits the fresh, warm pita. You can choose to top off your shawarma with a Cucumber Yogurt Sauce or a Traditional Tahini, or if you are my boyfriend, you choose both with spicy sauce on the side for an extra kick when you want it.
It doesn’t end there. The family that owns the small, but mighty, establishment are the nicest people you will ever meet. Seriously. Put them against Mother Theresa and they will stand their ground. The son ALWAYS remembers my order, and is one of the kindest individuals I have ever met in my life. If you are ever within a 1.5 hour radius of Davis, CA, Sam’s shawarma is worth the drive. If I am driving to SF, Napa, or another NorCal location, Sam’s is a permanent pitstop for lunch. Always. No exceptions. I gotta have it.

Tacolandia 2014

In honor of Taco Tuesday, I wanted to talk about my amazing experience at LA Weekly‘s Tacolandia 2014 this past Saturday! Curated by Bill Esparza, this is the second Tacolandia and the only event of its kind. For me, it was heaven. With more than 40 taco vendors, free Jarritos, and mariachi music set in the historic El Pueblo de Los Angeles, it was a true taco festival. The sold out event drew quite the crowd, but due to the amount of vendors, a Tequila Garden, and a sprawling venue, the lines never got to be too out of hand. Some of my favorites included bites from Corazon y Miel, Loteria Grill, Eggslut, and George’s at the Cove. In addition to all of the tacos, I loved the Jarritos truck handing out free bottles of my favorite sodas as well as Almond Kulture with their creative take on Horchata. It was close to impossible to sample every vendor without having to be rolled down Alameda Street.

Chef Eduardo Ruiz of Corazon y Miel was serving a delicious whole smelt taco with fresh avocado, baby tomatoes, salsa roja, and crema. The beautiful presentation along with the fresh ingredients made this taco one of my favorites.

Cielto Lindo Taquito was serving perfectly crunchy taquitos with their famous avocado sauce.

Loteria Grill chose to appeal to the adventurous foodies. They served a small tostada topped with grasshopper, guacamole, and salsa.

George’s at the Cove came all the way from La Jolla to serve a variety of choices. My favorite was the pork taco with marinated pork tail, crispy ear, and cabbage slaw.

Another favorite of mine was Chef Wes Avila’s porcini mushroom and black truffle taco. I have been wanting to try Guerilla Tacos for awhile now, and my expectations were definitely met. I was surprised at his choice of taco to feature, but it was just as good, if not better, than any meaty taco at the festival.

Last, but certainly not least, Eggslut boasted one of the longer lines of the day. It is debatable as to whether the name was responsible for the crowd or if the fried quail eggs that topped each bacon taco was responsible for the wait. Either way, it was definitely worth it. The salsa roja provided the perfect spicy to breakfast themed taco.

I am so glad that I attended and I can’t wait to see what next year has in store.

Bottlerock’n in Napa

When I heard that Outkast was reuniting this year, I fell out of my chair. Then, I heard that they were doing a festival tour, and I couldn’t be more upset. This would mean that I would have to find a festival to attend, fight the crowds, eat the bad food, and avoid the Molly rollin tweens as much as I could. I knew this would be impossible at Coachella, so once I saw that they weren’t playing at Outsidelands (still a tragedy), I knew I had to go to Bottlerock in Napa, CA.

I had never been to this festival, as I am exclusively an Outsidelands attendee every August in San Francisco, but I had heard good things. My expectations were met once I walked in to the festival at the Napa Valley Exposition. The different sections were organized pretty well, and while I had my personal struggle with fairground allergies, I liked the venue. It had its fair share of lines, but overall, not terrible. The food and drink options were good, not as extensive as Outsidelands, but that is to be expected from a smaller festival. Planning ahead, our first stop was to get something portable to eat later on that evening for dinner while we camped out a good spot to view the headlining show. We narrowed down our choices and settled on a tri tip sandwich from Tip’s Tri Tips. This will be addressed later (get excited). Next, we fueled up on a Beef Wagyu wrap from Morimoto Napa. It was handheld deliciousness and the perfect lunchtime snack. I wanted to be more impressed with the wine selection and displays, but it was a little underwhelming. There were twice as many booths selling ambiguously labeled wine out of bottles with hidden labels, as there were sponsored booths with cool swag and branding, which was disappointing. However, at a certain point, this is a festival where a majority of the attendees could care less if they are drinking a red blend or a Malbec from Argentina, so touché.
We thoroughly enjoyed performances by The Soft White Sixties, Matt and Kim, Third Eye Blind, and Weezer, but we were counting down the minutes until Outkast would grace us with their presence. They did not disappoint. The show was over an hour and half of pure awesome sauce. When I watched the Coachella live feed, their performance was lackluster and the crowd was dead. Napa knew better. The crowd knew their hits, old and new, and you could tell that Big Boi and Andre3000 knew what was up. They performed several hits from each album, including personal favorites like Aquemini, Ms. Jackson, and Crumblin’ Erb. While I am biased, I spoke with several individuals who also attended their Coachella performance, and they concurred that this one was better tenfold.
After the half hour cab ride back to our hotel in the faraway land of Benicia, we found the sandwiches we had bought so many hours earlier. Even though it was midnight, we were hungry and thought, why not? It was one of the best sandwiches I have ever had. It didn’t get soggy and the meat was delicious! Walk, don’t run to Tips Tri Tips in Nor Cal!

Overall, Bottlerock was a splendid experience. It was a nice change of pace to only attend a festival for one day, and should the lineup hold up for next year, I would definitely go back.
Keep a look out for my Outsidelands post coming up in August!
